Preparing for university can be a challenge. There are so many things that need to be done, so many things that need to be considered, and it’s hard to make sure that you’re getting them all sorted. The good thing is that when you’re a parent, you may have already been through this, or known someone who has, and therefore you’re in a position to help.
While you can’t do everything for your kids, you can stand beside them and try to help them the best you can, and this is what you should be doing right now. So, if you are looking for ways that you can help but you’re stuck at the moment, you’re in the right place. If you would like to find out more, feel free to read on.
Help Your Child Focus On Their Exams
The first thing that you need to do is help your child focus on their exams so that they are actually going to be able to go to university. Exams are one of the most important elements of getting into uni as it shows the level of achievement that your child has earned, and you want to make sure that you’re giving them the best chance possible.
Remember, when the application process comes around, they won’t know their final grades. So, you need to help them prepare for their mocks as best they can, as these provide the predicated grades your child is going to need to apply. Once they’ve done the mocks, help them work towards their actual exam.
If your child does end up failing their exams, they may be able to try again, it’s just something you’re going to have to talk to the school about.

Applying To University
The next thing that we’re going to be looking at is applying to university. The application process can be tough as there are so many questions to answer, they need to put options for their universities in, and then they need to write a covering letter, also called a personal statement. This is a document that goes alongside the application to let universities know exactly who they are, why they want to study that course, and so on.
This can be daunting, and choosing the universities to apply to can also be quite daunting, so you need to offer your help and support however you can. They might not want too much help until they decide that they actually do, but that’s okay.
Finding Accommodation
Next, we’re going to be looking at student accommodation. When your child goes to university, they’re going to need somewhere to live. When they accept their place at the university before their exams, that’s when you should start looking. You should always plan as though they are going to get the results they need to fulfill the conditions of their offer.
Apply for accommodation, make sure that everything is set up and ready to go, and then at least you know your child has somewhere safe to live during their first year. While it might be tough sometimes to secure a place, especially if the university is busy, there should be space. If your child then gets into a different university after results, then you need to do the same thing again at the new university.
Shopping For Necessities
Finally, you need to take them shopping for necessities. They need things to cook with, cleaning supplies, textbooks, bedding, a laptop to work on, and so much more. While they still technically live at home with you, they need to have everything that they need to live on their own.
As such, shopping for necessities is not something that you want to miss out on. It’s a fun experience, and it’s time that you can spend with your child before they go off to university and you don’t see them every day anymore. As well as this, you’re there to help make sure they get everything they need, not missing anything.
We hope that you have found this article helpful, and now see some of the things that you should be doing as a parent to help ensure that your child is prepared for university. While it might take time, and sometimes it’s going to feel overwhelming, between the two of you you have got this. Just remember that this is their experience, and you’re there to support them through it, not just to take over even though we know that can be hard.
