One of your main jobs as a parent is to instil your child with a range of important life skills so that they can eventually fly the nest and flourish independently. After all, you won’t always be by their side to help them deal with certain issues or overcome an obstacle. If you’re wondering where to start, this school in London has suggested five skills you could start with.
Good Communication
If your child is confident communicating with others, they will always be able to share how they’re feeling in an effective way and potentially ask for support when they need it. So, help them with their communication skills by encouraging openness in your home, but also by finding ways for your child to socialise with others and build strong relationships.
Money Management
Talk to your child about why having some savings is always advantageous and why they should avoid getting into debt. Money management isn’t something that is widely covered in schools, so lots of young people get themselves into trouble because they have little understanding of the repercussions. This doesn’t have to be a frightening conversation, just something you should mention every so often while your child is growing up.

Decision Making
The ability to make an independent decision is an important one. So, while your child is young ask them what their opinions are and let them choose what you have for dinner or what you watch on TV from time to time. This will help give them the confidence they need to make bigger decisions when they’re older. Help them feel validated so that they aren’t afraid to make a choice without you.
Organisation
Your child will need to learn how to manage and prioritise their time and keep themselves organised, otherwise they’ll be shambolic as adults. Perhaps buy them a calendar or diary so that they can keep track of any upcoming events or appointments.
