It’s around now that your little ones will be asking where you’re going on holiday this year. Maybe they have their hearts set on a particular destination or just want to see somewhere new; even so, it can be daunting to plan a family holiday, especially since there are a few of you to organise for. And that’s before we get to the cost!
Luckily, planning such a holiday might be easier than you think. By getting ahead of the game and planning it now, you’ll realise that it isn’t as stressful as you thought it’d be.
Think ahead
It’s all well and good booking a last-minute weekend away for two people; it’s a very different story when there are four of you. With many families booking out accommodation months in advance, don’t leave it to the last minute and pay extortionate fees. Decide where you want to go now and book everything that you can before you go.
This includes travel, accommodation, activities and a route if you’re planning to do a road trip. Once that’s done, the rest will fall into place.
Think outside the box
If you find that travel and accommodation is too expensive, why not turn it into a roadie? Not only will this help you and your family bond, get the kids into the fresh air and connect with the simple things in life, you won’t have to fork out hundreds for accommodation. And the travel is sorted too!
If you do plan a roadie, make sure to do your research. Investigate a route before setting off, book into campsites and motorhome parks as these are busy during summer too, and take out adequate motorhome insurance for added peace of mind.

Make a budget
One of the most stressful elements of a family holiday is the cost. Some of us are shocked by the price of a restaurant bill, never mind the expense of an entire holiday.
However, to have the holiday you want to still come home with some pennies, you have to decide where you want to spend your money. For instance, if you want to go far away, you’ll end up spending lots on the flights, but you can live cheaply whilst you’re there. Consider camping or staying in youth hostels. The same applies the other way around.
If also doesn’t hurt to take advantage of deals along the way. Many airlines and accommodation providers offer family discounts.
Plan affordable activities
Forget sky diving and bungee jumping and embrace the freedom of coastline bike rides, mesmerising sunset hikes and a spot of badminton on the beach. You don’t have to spend a fortune on activities if you’re heading to a destination with adventure baked in.
