Exploring Gratitude with Your Child

As parents, we want to give our children the best life possible. In doing so we also run the risk of creating entitlement and devaluing the importance of hard work. Gratitude is an important value to explore with children for this reason and is one that can improve their mental health and performance at school. It involves reflection and thinking about the things and people that we have to be grateful for which helps them to feel secure and loved. In turn, children that practise gratitude are more connected with the world around them, feel much more confident in their ability and do well academically. If you would like to learn about how to explore gratitude with your child, we have included some ideas from a prep school below.

Thank You Notes

It’s not about the gesture but the thought behind it. A thank you note is a sweet and thoughtful way of showing someone how grateful you are and how much they mean to you. At the end of the school year, this is something that you may want to do with your child so that they can end on a positive note and strengthen connections with their friends, teachers, etc.

The Words ‘Thank You’

Remembering to say “thank you” is the easiest way of showing appreciation. The two little words mean a lot and are something that you can help your child with through reminders.

A Gratitude Jar

This is more so for your child and a way for them to reflect on the things that they have to be thankful for. On paper, they can make a physical note of every act of kindness that they have received. Big or small, they can all go in. The jar should be clear and will serve as a visual reminder of how loved they are.
