Hattiers Egremont Rum Review
Hattiers is a relatively new company you may not have heard of. It seems to be starting to garner some attention though and has recently expanded its range. My review bottle is from just over a year ago. Back then, as far as I’m aware, this was the only expression in the company’s lineup. It’s now joined by white and navy rum variations, so the name ‘Egremont’ has been added to differentiate it from the others.
Hattiers Egremont is a blend of Bajan, Guatemalan, Dominican and Panamanian rums. That’s quite a few stamps on this rum’s passport, and that’s before it’s paired with Dartmoor water.
Rum circles seem to be less dismissive of blends than the whisky community, and it’s a good job too, because this is magic in a bottle.
How Much is Hattiers Egremont Rum?
Around £40. You won’t see it for much less than £37, nor much more than £46.
I’d never heard of it before I picked up a bottle, and wasn’t really expecting a great deal from it. I had a gift card for John Lewis that needed using, and this was the only rum they stocked that wasn’t spiced. Unfortunately, I can’t see it on the John Lewis site anymore, but it seems to be available on most of the big sites now anyway.
On the Nose
Bubblegum, dried fruit, a pleasant woody muskiness.
Is Hattiers Egremont Suitable for Sipping Neat?
Oh baby, you’d better believe it. Everything from the nose comes through to the palate in a perfectly rounded sense. It’s just beautifully balanced in every way. Whatever the master blender at Hattiers is being paid, he deserves double.
Is Hattiers Egremont Rum Suitable for Mixing?
Have you not been reading? This isn’t some cobbled together bottom shelf stuff to swill with cola. Take a sip, and enjoy all that it has to offer.
I mean, if you absolutely must sully it, then I imagine it’ll mix just fine. I’m not wasting any on finding out for you though.
That said, I am being a mite hypocritical as I’ve enjoyed a couple of glasses with a splash of coconut water. Fantastic stuff.
Hattiers Egremont Rum Review – Verdict
You could easily read this review and assume that I’ve been paid by Hattiers, or am just really pushing that Amazon affiliate link below (a quick look at some of my other less than complimentary reviews should quash that idea quickly though).
Instead, the simple truth is that it’s a cracking rum. Whilst it’s easily the best blended rum I’ve had, it’s possibly one of the best I’ve had full stop. This stuff is so ‘up my street’ that I’d better close my front room windows quickly before I get soaked. 9/10.
You’ll Probably like Hattiers Egremont Rum if You Already Like…
Perhaps as a result of it’s eclectic components, I guess you could pitch it somewhere on a Venn diagram between several rums including Havana Club 7, Plantation Barbados 5 year-old and Mount Gay XO. For me though, it beats all three of those by some margin.
At a similar price, Ron Matusalem 15 offers a slightly spicier and less fruity finish.
