Being creative is a part of a child’s core development. It allows a child to ignite their independence and self-esteem through play, educational activities, and just having the chance to be themselves. It’s a chance for children to explore their own personalities, what they ultimately want to do in their future, or what they enjoy most at school. To engage a baby’s creative development at an early age, try using a baby swing with music and bright colors.
In this guide from an independent school in Oxford, we take a look at the ways you can boost your child’s creativity.
Be different with your arts & crafts sessions
Arts and crafts are full of creativity for children, but take it further by adding a purpose to these sessions. Ask your child to make gifts for their friends by using craft materials, or take a trip to the craft shop to buy supplies that can let them put together something unique. Suggestions for ways to make good gifts include knitting, embroidery, painting and sewing.

Let your child take the lead
With any kind of activity-led fun, let your child choose what they want to do with their time. If they love fantasy novels, see if your child would like to play in the garden with some plastic swords and funky outfits. If you have a spare set of cardboard boxes, then ask if they’d like to make something out of them. Even the little things you have laying around the home can boost your child’s creative skills.
Add different elements to your child’s routine
Sprinkle in some different parts to your child’s routine by adding different things to breakfast or dinner time. Ask if your child has any favourite songs they want to play on the car drive to school for example, or ask them to choose what breakfast cereal they want to have. Let them take on the choices throughout the day to give them a sense of independence and to be creative in their responses.
