Optimism is the mental attitude needed to take on life’s challenges despite any fear holding you back. It’s more than just having confidence. Optimism focuses on opportunity and the benefits that await from exploring it.
We have joined a boarding school in Surrey to share how you can raise an optimistic child.
Allow Your Child to Make Their Own Mistakes
Giving your child the opportunity to make their own mistakes and face challenges can help them to reflect on the positive. Without having the chance to practice dealing with difficult emotions, it can be hard to develop real optimism.
Going through a negative experience can show your child just how strong they are and come to the realisation that there are even lessons to be learnt from failure. This doesn’t mean leaving your child to fend for themselves but allowing them to take calculated risks.

Praise Is Powerful
Recognising your child’s achievements, no matter how big or small can help to instil confidence. A self-belief that they are capable and strong. This will give your child the courage to try out new things which will aid in their development.
Teach Perseverance
The feeling of failure or struggle can be enough for your child to give up. Over time this will break their trust in themselves and eventually discourage any effort to try. When your child is going through something like this, always remind them of how far they have come.
You might find it helpful to create a list of goals or a roadmap to help them to get to where they want to be. This should include short-term, mid-term and long-term goals that allow your child to check their progress along the way. Similarly, your child could keep a diary to record their progress and reflect on all the brave things they have done.
