Mother’s Day ALWAYS catches me out.

It’s one of those sneaky holidays that often only makes itself known to you the day before.

Of course, you then have to run around panicking until you get a gift and card. These women carried you around for nine months and then wiped your bum for a couple of years after that. They deserve some recognition.

Forgetting Mother’s Day makes you an instant bad guy. There’s cold-blooded gangsters who at least turn up at their mum’s with a bouquet of flowers now and again. If you’re a parent yourself, the danger increases twofold.

If your kids are young, you’re expected to get something for their mum on behalf of them. The question is, who decides what to get? I do enjoy the mild peril of letting the kids decide. There’s certainly a risk that good money could be spent on something wholly unsuitable, but there’s also a case to be made that it means a little bit more.

When a child decides what to buy their mother, it’s the purest choice ever. You start to see how your child’s decision making is improving, while simultaneously realising how they’re growing up before your very eyes. It really can be quite poignant.

Plus my wife let my son choose me some bloody novelty flip-flops in the shape of fish for Father’s Day, so she’s got it coming to her.
