Good-quality cameras for children are few and far between, so it’s about time that I got round to this myFirst Camera 2 review.

If you’ve been looking for a competent snapper to introduce your little one to photography with, you’ve probably encountered a bit of a dilemma. The problem is that standard cameras aren’t durable enough to withstand the average excitable child, whilst the robust kiddy cameras produce shots that look like they were taken on a potato.

Thankfully Oaxis have addressed this issue with their myFirst range. Unlike other companies, Oaxis produce a number of different kids’ gadgets with decent-looking specs. Amongst their digital arsenal are headphones, smartwatches and even drones intended just for young children.

Cameras and Children

There are few better gifts to give a child that will bring out their creative side than a camera. Not only does having their own camera make them feel grown up, but it also encourages them to look at the world from different perspectives. With a snapper in hand, kids suddenly become twice as observant, looking for interesting things to capture. Look into printing out your kid’s best efforts as photobooks. Their sense of pride will go through the roof, and they’ll be keen to share their pictures with everybody.

What’s in the box?

My favourite aspect of the myFirst Camera 2 is the sheer amount of accessories that are bundled with the camera from the off. Many companies see accessories as a means of sourcing extra sales on top of the main item, so it’s pleasing to see so much offered as standard.

Alongside the camera you’ll find a silicone case, a waterproof case, a 16gb memory card, a memory card adapter, lanyard, micro USB charger cable, and even a sheet of stickers to decorate the camera with!

The big bonus here is the waterproof case. It’s capable of allowing the camera to be used as far as 3 metres underwater for up to 180 minutes, though I’d recommend coming up for air before that! This case is also shockproof, which is an absolute godsend when talking about kids’ electronics.

It’s always good to see a memory card included too. 16gb should be more than enough for your child to enjoy for a good while, though the camera itself supports up to 32gb cards.

Durability

It goes without saying that a kids’ camera needs to be able to withstand a few knocks, and the myFirst camera 2 doesn’t disappoint in that regard. On its own without accessories, the camera is quite robust. It survived plenty of drops from my kids before I thought I might be pushing my luck and put it in the waterproof case.

Around the house we tend to keep the waterproof and shockproof case on. This means that when the kids are finished with it, it doesn’t get scratched up or damaged under a pile of toys. When taking it out with us though, the silicone case is a little smaller but still offers some drop protection. It also provides a bit more of a grip, making it less likely to be dropped anyway.

Camera quality

While it’s never going to produce HDR-quality shots, the myFirst Camera 2 takes photos as videos that are far clearer than most kids’ cameras. It allows for 8 megapixel snaps, and HD videos in 30fps.

These specifications are just about right for a kids’ camera I feel. It’s enough to take sharp, high-quality shots, while also not taking up too much storage room quickly when your child takes 100 photos a minute.

The only omission here is a lack of flash, though as my kids are unlikely to be taking any nighttime snaps, we haven’t really found this to be a problem.

Ease of use

All cameras should be this easy to use!

My kids had no problem navigating the controls of the camera. Whilst some other cameras aimed at children have a multitude of buttons that can take some getting used to, the myFirst Camera 2 only has a handful, with easy to understand icons on each.
