It’s finally summertime again, and we know you’re probably due to refresh your wardrobe. It’s been a long winter, and the styles that were all the rage last year might not still look as appealing as you unpack them from the back of the closet. Maybe you’ve had a personal style change and want something more “you”. Maybe you’ve lost or gained some weight (neither is anything to be ashamed of!) and need new shirts that fit your current physique better.
Whatever the reason, if you need a summer shirt overhaul, we’re here to help. We’re going to look at the hottest men’s shirt trends and how to choose shirts that will work for you and your body in the heat. Let’s go!

Summer shirt trends
Metallics
The Y2K trends aren’t just back for women, but for men too! Metallics are an easy way to incorporate this look into your wardrobe without it being too much. Choose a silver metallic button-down shirt and pair it with baggy, indigo jeans and a simple, white undershirt for a night out clubbing.
Purple reigns
Menswear is welcoming a wave of purple this season. There are so many shades under this umbrella in warm and cool tones that you’ll be able to find one that works for your skin and your existing wardrobe. Seasonal sales are currently happening, so if you spot a mens designer t shirt sale, we suggest you detour and snatch up a few of your favourite shades.
V Formation
While the classic crew neck will never go out of style, we’re seeing a revival of the v-neck cuts that came with the preppy looks of the early 2000s (which are, no coincidence, also back again this season). Bring the drama with a deep v, or keep it casual with a simpler, shallower cut.

Stripes
Summer stripes are here, and our wardrobes are rejoicing. A classic stripe works well on everything from a dress shirt to a simple tee. Choose whichever size stripe is the most aesthetically pleasing to you, and pair it with shorts or jeans for a look that’s cool and classic.
Choosing your summer shirts
The first things you think about when choosing your garments are their aesthetic value, how they will work with the rest of your wardrobe, and how the cut of the shirt fits your body’s shape. Let’s talk about aesthetic value first. Typically, summer colours are lighter and “happier” than those we gravitate to in winter. Over the last few years, however, the line between summer and winter colours has become increasingly blurred, and we’re here for it.
Summer colours are whatever you want them to be, including black! The same applies to prints. If something catches your eye and makes you feel good, there’s no reason NOT to wear it. That said, we advise you to consider purchasing a shirt that is outside your norm. Try something with an extra bright floral or a colour you wouldn’t usually choose. Remember that our clothing needs to work for us for as long as possible, so consider how wearable a piece will be and for how long before you purchase it.
Now for the cut of a shirt. From dress shirts to tees, there are a number of different cuts or fits out there to choose from. If you understand the options you have, you’ll be able to find the one that best suits your style and body type. Here are the most commonly found men’s shirt cuts;
- Slim fit: a figure-skimming cut.
- Classic fit: the most common shirt cut you’ll find.
- Loose fit: as the name implies, a slightly baggier style.
- Extra length: longer in the torso than a classic or slim fit style.
- Racer cut: a wave at the bottom hem over each hip.
- Curved hem: a convex C-cut on both sides of the bottom hem.

If you’re struggling with how your outfits are coming together, changing a small detail like the fit can have a considerable impact. There’s no right choice here- select whichever style you prefer.
The last thing you probably think about is the composition of the fabric. When choosing shirts for summer wear, you should consider this and choose materials that will wear well in the heat. Choose natural fabrics if you want shirts that breathe well in hot weather, feel comfortable against your skin, hold their shape, wear well over time, and are kind to the planet. Cotton, linen, wool — these are all natural fibres that will breathe well (yes, even the wool!) and minimise sweating and overheating during the summer months. Do carefully note the care instructions on your shirt’s tag before washing or dry-cleaning because natural fibres often require extra consideration.

If you’re shopping for men’s shirts this summer, we’ve got you covered. Choose from some of this year’s hottest trends but make them yours: choose cuts and styles that will work in your wardrobe for years, and we can promise you’ll sport a wardrobe worth wearing.
