Exploring STEM Subjects with Your Child

STEM is a term that is becoming increasingly popular amongst parents and educators. It’s an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, and refers to any subjects that fall under this umbrella. By exploring STEM subjects in the home, parents will give their children a headstart in their education and help them develop a variety of key skills. I have teamed up with a prep school in Somerset to share some advice on how you can incorporate STEM learning into your at-home activities with your youngster.

It’s worth noting that STEM is all around us and you’re probably already exploring it without necessarily realising. For instance, if you ask your child to help you with the cooking or baking, they will be measuring, pouring, weighing, and calculating oven times. Next time you’re out for a drive, talk to your youngster about how the engine works and the impact that petrol and diesel cars are having on the environment.

Water Play

Water play is a fantastic option for younger kids. Next time they take a bath, bring along some (safe) items to drop into the water. Ask your child if they know which items will sink and which will float, and talk to them about the difference between absorbent and waterproof. Even pulling the plug in the bath is an opportunity for your child to learn, because you can chat about where they think the water goes.

Gardening

Gardening is another opportunity to explore STEM. Perhaps you and your child could start growing a vegetable patch and learn about what a plant needs to survive. Even going for a walk through the woods is a great learning experience because children are able to learn about different types of trees, animals, and bugs, and how everything changes with each season.

Games

There are plenty of board games that help children with basic numeracy skills. Monopoly is one example, as it involves simple sums. Playing games and exploring other activities as a family is a great way for your child to learn because they will be memorable experiences. Don’t be afraid to contact your child’s school if you would like some more information on how to explore STEM subjects at home and support your child’s overall academic progress.
