The Importance of English Literature in Schools

English is a core subject at school for the reason that it helps children across their studies and life in general by helping them to develop their all-important thinking skills. It’s a compulsory part of education from reception (when children learn about communication and literacy) all the way up to GCSE. We have teamed up with a prep school in Cambridge to explore the importance of English literature in schools further.

History

In English, children have the opportunity to analyse historical texts like the plays written by William Shakespeare. It gives them an understanding of how language has evolved and helps them to envision what life was once like.

Building Arguments

English is a subject where virtually any answer is correct so long as you can provide a logical explanation and sound evidence. Teachers practice this with their pupils using PEE which encourages them to back their claims with justifiable proof. A universal skill that will help them to develop stronger arguments in both their essays and everyday life.

Communication Skills

English helps children to improve on their spelling, punctuation and grammar and communicate effectively with others. A skill that is needed in all aspects of life to work with others and socialise.

Open Mindedness

Books allow children to consider different viewpoints to their own as they are written by writers from a range of backgrounds. This helps them to become better thinkers, open minded, and more empathetic.

An Appreciation

Words hold a lot of power and influence. Historically, they have been used to promote peace, equality and make a stance against bad. English can help children to appreciate their role and understand how we can use our words to be the most effective and evoke emotion.

Formal Writing

In lessons children learn how to write formally and for different purposes. This can come in handy when needing to write letters.
